## Summary

Paraguay residency can support a banking application, but it does not guarantee an account. Separate local personal spending from business receipts, then check each provider's identity, address, tax and source-of-funds requirements. A Paraguayan account and an overseas business account can serve different parts of the same setup.

---
The useful question is not just “Which bank can I open?” It is “How will I receive client payments, pay business expenses and access my money while travelling?”

Start with those jobs. You can then choose accounts that work together, instead of expecting one account to handle your company, personal spending and investments. This guide is for people considering Paraguay residency who earn internationally. Start with the [residency setup guide](/blog/posts/paraguay-tax-residency-guide) if you are still deciding on the wider plan.

## Give each account a clear job

| Money you need to manage | Account to investigate | What to check first |
|---|---|---|
| Local living costs | Paraguayan personal account | Accepted ID, currency, transfer limits and card access |
| Your company's client receipts and expenses | Business account in the company's name | Company jurisdiction, activity, owners and supported payment routes |
| Personal spending abroad | Personal bank or payment account | Your actual residence eligibility, foreign-exchange costs and withdrawal limits |
| Long-term investments | Suitable investment or brokerage account | Residence eligibility, asset custody and the separate protection rules |

This is a planning framework, not a requirement to open four new accounts. Keep a working account where it still fits, and update your details accurately when your circumstances change.

For example, a consultant with a company might receive invoices into the company's account, pay business costs there, and make properly recorded payments to a personal account for living expenses. An owner transfer still needs the right accounting treatment. Moving money between accounts is not itself a tax strategy.

## Opening a personal account in Paraguay

The bank and product determine the application requirements. Itaú's broader personal application form asks about identity and residence documents, home and overseas addresses, tax details, occupation and the origin of funds. It also asks non-resident foreign applicants about their connection with Paraguay. Those fields show what the bank investigates; they are not a promise that a passport alone will be accepted. [Itaú personal application form](https://www.itau.com.py/Content/Archivos/F-00110_Solicitud-para-apertura-de-cuenta-PF.pdf).

For a specific digital example, Itaú's Light account requires a valid Paraguayan cédula and selfie verification. It is a guaraní savings account with free opening and maintenance, but monthly movements are limited to three minimum salaries. Its fuller account process requires income evidence. A convenient account for everyday spending may therefore be unsuitable for larger business flows. [Itaú digital account](https://www.itau.com.py/cuentadigital).

Before applying, ask which account matches your expected monthly transfers, whether it receives the currencies you need, and whether any branch visit or additional documents are required. Confirm the tariff for international receipts separately from the advertised account-maintenance fee.

## Prepare the evidence before you need the account

Use this as a preparation list, then get the exact requirements from your chosen provider:

- **Identity and status:** passport, accepted local ID and residence documents.
- **Address:** evidence of where you actually live, in the format the provider accepts.
- **Tax details:** applicable countries of tax residence and tax identification numbers.
- **Income and funds:** contracts, invoices, statements or other records explaining where the money comes from.
- **Business activity:** what you sell, where customers are, expected transaction sizes and countries involved.
- **For a company:** incorporation and ownership records, tax identifier and relevant operating evidence.

Make sure the documents tell the same story. An address used to receive company mail is not necessarily your personal residential address. Our [cédula, RUC and tax-certificate guide](/blog/posts/paraguay-residency-ruc-tax-certificate) explains which document answers which question.

If your funds come from crypto, prepare the transaction history before transferring them. The [Paraguay crypto guide](/blog/posts/paraguay-crypto-tax-residency) covers reporting and records to discuss with your accountant.

## Can you use a US business account?

Potentially, where the company and its owners meet the provider's requirements. Mercury, for example, accepts applications from international founders, but requires a US-registered company with existing or planned US operations. It also requires a physical principal operating address and the owners' actual residential addresses; a registered-agent address or mail drop is not a substitute. Country and business restrictions also apply. [Mercury eligibility requirements](https://support.mercury.com/hc/en-us/articles/28770467511060-Eligibility-and-requirements-for-opening-a-Mercury-account).

A US LLC and Paraguay residency therefore do not automatically produce an approved account. Nor does opening one settle the company's filing obligations. See the [home-country and company planning guide](/blog/posts/european-nomad-tax-playbook) before choosing the structure just to obtain banking access.

## What about Wise Business with Paraguay residency?

Assess the company and the owner separately. Wise's US business verification asks for business registration and a physical trading address, as well as owners' residential information. A registered-agent address may serve the registration purpose but is not a substitute for a real trading address. Personal account availability and business account eligibility are also separate questions. [Wise US business verification](https://wise.com/help/articles/2953878/how-do-i-verify-my-us-business).

Before applying, confirm that Wise supports the business's actual trading location and your ownership/residency circumstances. Enter the real details and use evidence that supports them. NTH can help with account selection and application preparation; Wise makes the approval decision. Holding a US LLC does not bypass its checks.

## Compare the complete cost of moving money

Work through one realistic month: your customers pay you, you pay suppliers, you transfer personal spending money, and you use a card abroad. For each step, check:

| Cost or limitation | Question to ask |
|---|---|
| Receiving money | Are local transfers, wires and payment-processor payouts supported? |
| Currency conversion | What exchange rate and additional fee apply? |
| Sending money | Are intermediary-bank charges possible? |
| Card and cash use | What are the overseas card and ATM charges? |
| Access and limits | What could delay a transfer or require extra documentation? |

Choose based on the routes you will actually use. A free account can still be expensive for repeated international transfers. Keep access to a backup account while a new application is being reviewed.

## Check what protection actually covers

Paraguay's central bank describes deposit protection of up to 75 minimum salaries per person or legal entity at each covered institution, subject to the scheme's rules. Confirm that the institution and deposit qualify. [BCP deposit protection](https://www.bcp.gov.py/en/web/institucional/depositos-garantizados).

For a US app or fintech, identify the bank holding the deposits and the conditions for coverage. The FDIC explains that a nonbank app is not itself FDIC-insured, and deposit insurance does not insure you against the nonbank's failure. Do not assume investments or crypto have the same protection as eligible bank deposits. [FDIC guidance on third-party apps](https://www.fdic.gov/consumer-resource-center/2024-06/banking-third-party-apps).

## Banking is one part of the residency setup

Receiving money abroad does not automatically make it foreign-source income. Paraguay's tax rules examine the income and activity, not just the destination account. [Law 6380/2019](https://www.bacn.gov.py/leyes-paraguayas/9332/ley-n-6380-de-modernizaci-n-y-simplificaci-n-del-sistema-tributario-nacional).

NTH's **US$5,950 Premium+ setup** includes company and banking application support alongside Paraguay residency coordination. The provider makes the account decision. [See the service inclusions](/services) and use the [cost guide](/blog/posts/paraguay-tax-residency-cost-2026) to separate setup fees from ongoing account and compliance costs.

## Plan the next step

Before forming a company just to access an account, review [Paraguay residency and a US LLC](/blog/posts/paraguay-residency-us-llc). It separates company classification, reporting and bank eligibility.
## Frequently asked questions

### Can a foreigner apply for a bank account in Paraguay?

Yes, banks publish application processes that accommodate foreign applicants, but eligibility depends on the bank and account. Itaú's digital account requires a valid Paraguayan cédula; its broader personal application form also has fields for foreign identity and residence documents. Neither guarantees approval.

### Does Paraguay residency automatically qualify me for Mercury?

No. Mercury assesses the company, founders, operations, addresses and other eligibility criteria. Its published requirements include a US-registered company and existing or planned US operations. Paraguay residency alone does not meet those requirements.

### Does receiving money in a foreign account make it foreign-source income?

No. The account location does not by itself establish the source or tax treatment of income. The activity, where work is performed and the relevant tax rules still matter.
