Maintaining Paraguay Residency: Visits, Renewals and Records
Your first visit starts a process. After that, you need to know which documents have been issued, when your next immigration step is due and who is handling any tax or company administration.
NTH’s service separates the initial appointments, document processing and ongoing support. The same distinction is useful whether you use our team, another provider or manage the work yourself.
Keep immigration and tax on separate lists
| Part of your setup | What to keep track of |
|---|---|
| Immigration residence | Category, approval record, card expiry, absences and the next application |
| Identity documents | Validity of your cédula and passport, replacements and updated details |
| Paraguay tax administration | RUC details, registered obligations, filing records and any certificate application |
| Company and banking | Company filings, account reviews, address details and source-of-funds evidence |
| Service agreement | Included period, renewal scope, fees and who owns each task |
A valid residence card does not establish that all tax filings are complete. A tax-residency certificate is also a separate procedure. Our documents guide explains the distinctions.
Plan absences before they become a problem
Law 6984 identifies unjustified absence of more than one year for a temporary resident, or more than three consecutive years for a permanent resident, as grounds for cancellation, subject to the authority’s authorisation provisions. Do not interpret that as a universal tax-residence day count or a guarantee that a brief visit satisfies every obligation. Migration Law 6984.
Keep entry and exit records and check your travel plan with the responsible professional before a long absence. Put reminders comfortably before a relevant limit, allowing time for changed flights or paperwork.
Prepare the permanent-residence stage in advance
For the ordinary category-change route, Migraciones says to apply during the three months before the temporary card expires. It also publishes late-application conditions. Use the normal window as your plan rather than treating a late route as extra free time. Official category-change instructions.
The permanent card is renewed every ten years under those instructions. Permanent status therefore does not mean you never update a document again. Other routes can differ; check your own category.
Confirm which tax obligations are registered
Ask your accountant for a written list of the obligations attached to your RUC, their filing frequency and the records you need to provide. Do not assume that having no tax payable means no return is required, or that every resident has the same monthly filings.
DNIT’s taxpayer guidance distinguishes registrations and returns. The relevant obligations depend on your activity and registration. Have changes in activity or personal details reviewed rather than simply copying the previous year’s setup.
For any US company, keep its compliance calendar separately. A Paraguay filing does not replace a US filing. The US LLC guide sets out the questions to take to the preparer.
Know what your renewal payment buys
NTH’s current Premium+ scope includes first-year basic Paraguay accounting, a US filing concierge and a 12-month lease. The lease is separate from accommodation. Later support and the permanent-residency stage need their own scope and cost confirmation. Current service scope.
Before renewing, ask for the services, covered period, filing responsibilities and any provider charges in writing. Compare the renewal with your actual needs, especially if your company, travel pattern or income has changed.
A simple handover checklist
Keep copies of your issued documents and submission receipts. Record the next immigration deadline, the next planned visit, your filing calendar and the contact for each item. Ask for confirmation when a task is completed, not just when it has been requested.
A practical calendar might contain a card-expiry reminder, a travel review well before an absence limit and accountant-agreed deadlines for sending records. These are planning examples, not official deadlines for every applicant.
