Paraguay Residency Requirements: Your 2026 Document Checklist
The easiest time to fix a missing document is before you fly. Start by choosing the correct immigration route, then have the actual documents checked together rather than ordering a generic “Paraguay pack”.
This checklist covers the ordinary temporary-residence route under Law 6984/2022. Mercosur and other categories have their own requirements. Nationality, previous residence and family circumstances matter.
Documents to prepare
Migraciones publishes the controlling temporary-residence checklist. The table below is a preparation aid; use that official list for your individual submission.
| Document group | Where it comes from | Check before travel |
|---|---|---|
| Identity document | Issuing authority | Validity, accepted document type and required copies |
| Birth record | Civil registry | Correct names and authentication |
| Criminal record | Relevant national or federal authority | Previous countries of residence, age rules and current validity |
| Civil status | Civil registry or court | Marriage, divorce or death records if applicable |
| Entry evidence | Your Paraguay entry | Stamp or entry record; visa requirements if applicable |
| Local checks | Relevant Paraguayan authorities | INTERPOL and foreigner police records where required |
| Local declarations | Application process | Address, occupation/activity and required declarations |
Keep a folder for originals and a separate digital copy. In your own tracker, add the issue date, expiry date, authentication status, translation status and the person who has checked each item.
Do previous countries of residence matter?
Yes. Migraciones’ criminal-record instructions distinguish the country of origin from residence elsewhere, including the previous three years. They also contain nationality-specific and age-related conditions. Someone who has lived in several countries should confirm which certificates are required before ordering one from only their passport country. Official background-check conditions.
Prepare a simple history of where you lived and for how long. This makes the document review more useful and can prevent discovering the wrong issuing country after arrival.
Apostilles, legalisation and translations
Foreign records must meet the applicable authentication requirements. The Hague apostille route and consular legalisation are different processes. Documents in another language generally need Spanish translation under Migraciones’ rules, with an exception for specified Brazilian documents in Portuguese. A foreign translation may itself need authentication. Official authentication and translation instructions.
Ask the reviewer to confirm the sequence for each record: obtain the original, authenticate it, translate it and prepare the required copies. Do not assume an ordinary photocopy or a self-translated document will be accepted.
There is no useful one-size-fits-all expiry rule
Check the validity of the passport, criminal records and any entry documents against the route and planned filing date. Do not apply a blanket “all documents last three months” rule unless the responsible authority actually requires it for that document.
If your trip is delayed, review the dates again. A document accepted for planning purposes may expire before the application is submitted.
What happens after the documents are ready?
NTH’s current service plans around 4–6 days for the initial appointments. That does not mean every card or tax document is issued during the trip. Read the visit and processing timeline before booking onward travel. NTH’s current service description.
For the later permanent stage, Migraciones publishes a separate checklist and application window. Reuse this preparation method, but not the temporary-residence checklist as if it were the permanent one. Permanent category-change requirements.
Before you book flights
- Confirm the route and entry requirements for your passport.
- Have the complete scans checked, including spelling and name changes.
- Confirm which originals and authenticated copies you must carry.
- Agree which appointments and local documents will be organised in Paraguay.
- Confirm the itinerary, expected processing stages and any later travel.
- Ask what happens if a document is rejected or needs replacing.
